All I want to do is set up my voice mail on my Tracfone and be able to retrieve it. I can't find information anywhere online. Please don't tell me to go to the Tracfone website. I keep getting an error message referring me to their "customer service" phone number-- then when I call they either put me on hold forever or hang up on me. :flamemad:

So far, every search points me back to the Tracfone website. I'm really getting frustrated. This isn't intuitive at all to me.

Help?

If you're searching for a mobile device with smart phone features, (without the smart phone price tag) one of the new LG models may be on your wish list. LG has given us several choices over the years and 2009 is no exception - the Chocolate Touch, enV Touch, and the enV3 have hit Verizon stores with new features, redesigned bodies and more. Read on to see if an LG phone is right for you.

LG Chocolate Touch

The Chocolate Touch from LG features:

An FM radio with 12 presets

Integrated Song ID

Dedicated side key for easy access to favorite songs

Bluetooth

"Join the Band" - a band application

Dolby Mobile EQ

The Chocolate Touch is smaller than many devices out there today - it made my hands feel gigantic. It is the thinnest phone in the group at less then a half inch thick (0.47" or 12mm).

Out of the box the first thing you'll notice is the shiny body and back panel featuring a design. The Chocolate Touch has many buttons - more than the other LG models. They include a dedicated music and speaker button (which mutes everything) a camera button, lock button and volume controls. Unlike the other two phones, the microSD card is accessed by removing the back cover. The other LGs have the battery itself incorporated into the design, (see below for pictures) rendering a back cover unnecessary. The charger port is on the upper left, which I found kind of annoying.

Unlike the other LG models, the touch screen is the main interface of this phone. The screen is responsive and the haptic feedback is a nice addition. Unlike capacitive screens, a resistive screen like the one on the Chocolate Touch lets you use your fingernails to more accurately touch a spot on the screen. However, I found that scrolling through menus could be a bit cumbersome.

The on-screen QWERTY keyboard may take some getting used to if you've never used this type of keyboard before; it's responsive, but the letters are pretty small. There is also a vertical keyboard that can be used if you only have one hand free. There is a nifty feature that allows you to draw characters with your finger.

Using the web browser on the Chocolate Touch was a pain. You can't simply enter a URL in the address bar - you are forced to use Verizon's web interface to browse the internet. I suspect LG is attempting to provide a simple interface for the internet, but it doesn't work very well. Loading a web page took forever, and when it finally finished the page didn't look right. Zooming in was a difficult task, and 'focusing' the page after zooming took even longer.

LG enV Touch

Features:

3.2mp camera with flash

Mobile e-mail, corporate e-mail, mobile im, and chat*

V-CAST Music with Rhapsody*

Mobile Broadband Connect capabilities

Visual Voice Mail*

VZ Navigator*

Bilingual interface*

*features available on all phones, but these are the ones Verizon chose to market for this phone

The enV Touch is the upgrade to the popular LG Voyager released a little more than 2 years earlier. Improvements over the LG Voyager worth noting:

EV-DO rev A

Bluetooth 2.1

3.5mm headset jack

accelerometer

the move from a 2.0mp camera to a 3.2mp camera with flash & face detection

2.81 vs 3.0 inch display & a much better resolution - 240x400 vs 480x800

slightly better talk time

Improved browser

Centered space bar and added favorite and new text message button

Out of the box you'll notice the onyx outline, the dark brushed metal look of the send, cancel, and end buttons and the simple styling of the back.

I really liked the cleaned up interface and feel of the phone over the old LG Voyager. The resolution on the screens is immediately noticeable. The enV Touch is the largest phone in this comparison, however the difference is only a few millimeters in length and width.

The enV Touch features a QWERTY keyboard. I really like the feel of this keyboard. The buttons are raised just enough to easily type through a sentence. The space bar in the middle might take a little bit of getting used to when typing bottom row letters.

The outside screen, like the Chocolate Touch, is resistive, but is much higher resolution. It's responsiveness is good, and includes haptic feedback. Scrolling through menus on the enV Touch was a bit cumbersome like with the Chocolate Touch.

It uses the same touch landscape QWERTY as the Chocolate Touch. I don't see why you would ever need to use this keyboard, but it's there if you want to. There is also the same vertical touch keyboard found on the Chocolate Touch that can be used if you only want to use one hand.

The web browser on the enV Touch functioned much better than on the Chocolate Touch. There isn't any tabbed browsing, but there is a way to manage multiple pages open at the same time. If an rss feed exists you can add that to your feeds. You can browse using only the touch screen as well. All these are great features that you may not expect on a feature phone.

The 3.2mp camera has a flash and features a Schneider-Kreuznack lens. Yeah, I don't know what that means either, to be honest, but I'm sure it means you get better pictures because of it. Out of all three LG phones, the camera on the enV Touch was the best. Video was also good.

Unfortunately LG didn't give the enV Touch a good battery. It has the lowest talk time of the three, coming in at 4.33 hours. If you use your phone a lot, you may need to get a better battery for the phone.

I should also point out that this was the only phone with EV-DO Rev A. This makes data just a bit faster.

LG enV3

Features:

3.0mp camera with flash

Mobile e-mail, corporate e-mail, mobile im, and chat*

V-CAST Music with Rhapsody*

Visual Voice Mail*

VZ Navigator*

HTML web browser*

Text instant reply feature

*features available on all phones, but these are the ones Verizon chose to market for this phone

The enV3 is the upgrade to the popular enV2 (and the rest of the series). Here are some updates worth noting from the enV2:

A little bit taller, but otherwise the same size

Lighter

Slightly better talk time

Slightly larger external display

Added left and right navigation on outside

3mp camera

Bluetooth 2.1

Right away I noticed the blue tint to the phone. It also comes in a red color, but does not come in a black. The styling on the back of the phone resembles the enV Touch.

The enV3 is basically a smaller version of the enV Touch without the touch screen. If you had an enV2 you'll like the updates that were made to the enV3. It's worth noting that the enV2 came out only a year before, so there wasn't as much updating to do as with the Voyager to the enV Touch.

I like that they increased the size of the outside screen and made those clunky buttons smaller. Because of the larger screen and the addition of the left and right navigation you can now scroll through menu's and access more things than on the enV2 without opening the phone.

The QWERTY keyboard is laid out the same as the enV Touch but is squeezed horizontally a bit. The spacing between the keys is actually the same.

I found it easy to type on just like the enV Touch.

The camera was good, and comes in second. Pictures seemed a bit grainy, but not bad. The flash helps with the low light situations.

Again, I was disappointed by the browser. It resembles the Chocolate Touch browser and fails almost the same. I think it actually renders pages a bit faster though. On top of that it was hard to actually find. They stuck it under the Media menu under "Dashboard / Mobile Web".

All Three Phones
The lack of applications that are available for these phones is disappointing. When you bring up the 'Extras' menu and go to 'Get New Applications' there is nothing there. Huh? Furthermore if you want to search applications, you have to download and install a search application. Okay?

If you want to get Facebook updates on your LG phone, you'll have to jump through some hoops. After I found the search application on the enV3, I searched for 'Facebook' which brought up an app called 'Social Beat'. With this app you can connect you Facebook, Myspace, Gmail, Google Talk, Twitter, and RSS feeds. With the Facebook section you can view you feed, inbox, and wall, but that's it. For some reason I couldn't even find the search app or Social Beat on the other phones. What a let down in this department.

Fortunately LG has given you the option to view text messages by contact (threaded) or by date. I like this feature and am glad they included it.

One design flaw that may bother you is the way the phones lock and unlock. The env3 locks after a set amount of time or if you hold down 0, and unlocks by simply pressing the ok button. The enV Touch and Chocolate Touch both have lock buttons on the side. If you press the button once, you are prompted on the screen to slide to unlock the screen. If you press the lock button twice the screen unlocks. I've never seen any other phone do this. At least on the LG Voyager it had a slide side lock button. I foresee pocket dialing with these phones.

Go here to view a comparison of pictures taken with all 3 cameras: http://cellphoneforums.net/verizon/t...e-cameras.html

Another design flaw for all three is that when the phones are locked, if you press a physical button the screen comes back on. If you keep your phone in your pocket all day, you could constantly be pressing buttons. This will surely drain the battery pre-maturely.

The mobile e-mail is a nice feature, but Verizon still wants to charge you extra for it ($5/month). VZ Navigator and Rhapsody are also nice features, but again, cost extra. If you don't have a data plan attached to these phone you pay per MB. If you're going to use all these extra features, you might as well pay the $30 a month data plan and get a BlackBerry or Droid phone. I guess that's what Verizon wants though.

Here are some comparison pics of all 3 phones:
Conclusion
All three phones are excellent updates to their predecessors. Choose the LG that fits your lifestyle - the enV3 is best for those who mainly use their device to chat and text. For those that want a stylish phone with a feature-heavy media player, the Chocolate Touch would be your best bet. If you occasionally browse the internet, and want a phone with a quality camera and high resolution screen, choose the enV Touch.

However, if you're a high-volume mobile internet user that wants to browse and update Facebook, read and reply to e-mail and use a mobile calendar, you may want to consider one of Verizon's smart phones, the BlackBerry Storm2 or the Motorola Droid.
