Vic, Vic, VIC!

Look CLOSELY at this picture....No, take off the purple-filtered Apple
glasses for a minute.

Now, Iphone is second to RIM in NORTH AMERICA, a fast-becoming secondary
market across the planet. ...And, once again, RIM wipes its ass with an
old product that's been out for a long time like a Palm Pilot.

Now, let's look at the BIGGER picture away from the ATT backwards
network, with or without Starbucks this hour.....

Notice how much WIDER the BLACK band is across the graph at the TOP EACH
quarter since the graphs start, compared to that little purple slice
piled upon the more mature technologies.

Now, look at the DIFFERENCES in how tall the Red (Linux) and Orange
(Symbian) bands are from Q2 to Q3 at the right. The DIFFERENCE in
thickness of the Orange band is TWICE as tall as the whole purple band.
The DIFFERENCE in thickness of the Red band is THREE TIMES as tall as the
whole purple band!

Both Linux and Symbian smartphone sales INCREASED LOTS MORE than the
WHOLE SALES TOTAL of both iPhones or RIM products. Symbian smartphones
outsold the TOTAL SALES of Iphones PLUS RIMS PLUS Micro$oft smartphones
by 350%!

Now, put the Purple-filtered Apple glasses back on and erase the chart
from your browser before anyone else besides all of us start laughing so
hard at you....

More NEW Smartphones in Q3 run SYMBIAN than ALL the RIMs and iPhones ever
sold on the PLANET!

Ask yourself WHY?

Here's some reasons:
> It would be nice to get one that could integrate
> with that, but I think that's doubtful...
>
>

Stop by Circuit City/Best Buy or your favorite electronics discounter and
pair your phone with one of their BT car radios and try it. I think that's
the best way to go. You can even play your stereo songs on the phone over
the car stereo over A2DP if your phone supports it. They have controls for
the handsfree on the car radios, now.

Sellphone audio never sounded better.....and it interrupts whatever the
radio is listening to while you make/take the calls.

Don't let them sell you a "Bluetooth Ready" car stereo that takes another
$150 box before the damned phone will pair with it. Most of the car
stereos are like this....addon sales crapware.

My phone still has a pairing with the nicest Pioneer at Best Buy's car
department. What's fun is to sneak in and turn it on BT then stand off and
play Glenn Miller big band music real loud for the hip-hopper/rappers in
the baggy jeans and do-rags.....(c;

Unless someone else has paired with it, I don't even have to enter the auto
department before I can control it!....hee he..

Looking to upgrade from my LG VX6000. I am totally satisfied with the 6000's
sound quality and Verizon service is excellent in my area (had AT&T
previously and would not take it again for free). My 6000 is missing a few
features I would like, such as:

1. Speaker phone

2. Bluetooth

3. Store and sync contact information from Outlook (using Bluetooth or any
other method)

4. Use my cell phone to get internet access through my notebook computer
(how
is it done, what does it cost, how fast and reliable is it??).

5. Email access through the phone (occasional, not a major priority or I
would
get a Blackberry)

6. GPS (I have a Garmin, but would still like to have this capability in my
cell phone)

7. Listen to audio books from audible.com (so I would not have to also carry
an
Ipod)

If anyone currently owning and using the XV-6900 could give me some
feedback, it would be appreciated.
> > Can we at least agree that your above stated reason for their churn is
> > your _opinion_ rather than any independently documented evidence?
>
> No, but if it makes you happy, we can say that it's _one_ of the reasons
> for their high churn.

Then I have to play the "Navas card": cite, please? Point to ANY evidence
coverage is a leading cause of their churn. While T-Mo's coverage is not
as complete as their competitors, it's improved greatly in the last two-to-
three years (partially via roaming agreements,) yet their churn has been
fairly stable. Purely statistical evidence would indicate another cause.
(Just as Sprint's sudden spike in churn can't be due to their coverage- it
hasn't suddenly deteriorated, yet their churn is escalating.)

> Some of the J.D. Power studies are intentionally misleading consumers,
> and the one quoted was one of them.

No, but the OP may certainly have misstated them. The J.D. Power's survey
described here was a CUSTOMER SERVICE survey, period, ranking consumer's
experiences with the CS department of the carrier- no more, no less. How
is that "misleading?"

> There are similar studies where
> some of the worst quality vehicles win accolades for "sales satisfaction"
> or "initial quality" but the reality is that they're unreliable vehicles
> despite a pleasant buying experience...

Which would be misleading if it was a vehicle reliabilty survey. One can't
read more into a study than the data it presents. Again, J.D. Power's
survey described here was a customer service satisfaction survey, period.

> > T-Mo's rural coverage is lacking (comparitively), but in my 6+ years
with
> > them I find their urban/suburban coverage (even in the Bay Area) ranges
> > from adequate to excellent, depending on market.
>
> I find them excellent when I have coverage, and inadequate where there is
no coverage.

Funny. "Adequate" to me means it works almost anywhere I go- I've been in
metro/suburban areas (like the Bay Area) where occasionally stretches of
highway had gaps. Loss of coverage for a quarter-mile stretch on a scenic
highway is "adequate" IMO. I could have more complete coverage with Verizon,
but of course my $72 family plan (1000 minutes, with unlimited data on two
PDA phones) would jump to $130. Sorry- seamless coverage on the PCH on my
one trip out west every year or two isn't worth an extra $700/year.

> > (And, frankly, I thought we put the 1900MHz issue to rest.
>
> I don't know where you got that idea. Even the Sprint and T-Mobile
> people that show up at planning commission and city council meetings
> asking for approval for towers admit that this is an issue, though they
> never use "1900 MHz" in their lobbying. They are invariably questioned
> as to why Cingular and Verizon are able to provide coverage to these
> areas without the need for towers in these residential neighborhoods,
> and have to explain about the 'different cellular technology' they use
> that requires more sites. You can't look at a couple of areas where
> 1900 works perfectly well, and extrapolate from that that there is no
> issue (or apparently you can).

But you can look at one area- yours- and extrapolate that 1900 is a serious
disadvantage nationwide?

I simply said it's a factor that a typical metro/suburban build-out doesn't
usually have to be concerned with, since capacty issues already require a
denser build-out than coverage alone requires. Just because you live in a
fairly atypical NIMBY zone doesn't mean everyone does. I couldn't tell you
where the cell towers serving my neighborhood are- apparently they're
fairly inconspicuous enough.

1900 requires a little more engineering than lower frequencies, but not to
the point that it makes the higher frequencies or the carriers using them
undesirable for that reason alone. Apparently Verizon designs a good
network, according to your oft-quoted survey, even in their 1900-only
areas, so the frequency alone doesn't seem to be an issue IF the carrier
compensates properly for it.

Somehow, I suspect that if you moved to Miami, you wouldn't jump ship to
AT&T simply because they were the local 800MHz carrier, but would still be
banging the Verizon drum.

I'm not seeing in your links where law enforcement is "intercepting" text
messages. The text message they show could have been sent to an undercover
agent's phone, or a turncoat's phone. In that case "text message
encryption" would have been worthless.

> iPhone Data Only = iTablet?

> Personally I suspect that Apple will soon release a superior internet
> mini device that is a glorified iPod Touch with the data portion only
> of GSM network and WiFi. This would be an Apple iTablet/iPod.

I seriously doubt it. Apple is too savvy to release such a niche product.
Nokia has been the most successful web tablet sellet ever with those N8xx's
Larry always manages to bring up in a thread (regardless of topic!) and even
those don't sell in any real numbers (at least not until Nokia slashed the
price of the N800 to cost to make room for the 810.)

Why in Lord's name, would they sell a tablet with GSM data but no GSM voice
capability? Many of the laptop data cards out there still have headphone
jacks on them so you can make a voice call in a pinch. (My T-Mo data card
has one, for which they charge a $0.25/min. flat rate for voice calls.)

> For
> twenty or thirty dollars you will have unlimited 3G data access to the
> Internet through AT&T and also full use of their WIFI sites. There
> will be no phone capabilty in this tablet. This will give both AT&T a
> new revenue stream and capture customers who are locked into Verizon
> and Sprint with their cellphones but who lust after the neat
> capabilites in an Apple Touch device. I doubt they would allow
> tethering for that price. There probably will be no camera so some
> business and secure government sites would have no problems with this
> as a business tool.

> Apple sales (and stock) will explode if that is their still secret
> plan. Sprint WiMax plans may implode if AT&T trumps them with this and
> Sprint doesn't have a device similar to the iTablet.

Oxford off his meds again? Apple could make the greatest WiFi tablet ever
and neither sales nor stock will "explode" because it's a niche product- a
very small subset of the population likes browsing on devices smaller than a
laptop, and only of subset of those folks (one is Larry, apparently!) are
willing to go BACK to lugging two devices- that's why we bought smartphones
in the first place- to leave our laptops, PDAs, and tablets at home. If
such a device was produced, I'll wager you won't see AT&T data built in, or
cameras left out to cater to the enterprise- instead, it'd be an "iPod Touch
Max," picture a Touch with a 7" screen, designed more to replace a portable
DVD player with web tablet functionality tossed in as a bonus. In fact, if
they built in a sufficiently res TV output, it'd double as a poor man's
Apple TV- content downloaded directly to the device over Wifi via the iTunes
store or pulled from your home network, and displayed on your TV, all from
the control of the large screen tablet. (This idea isn't original- see the
Archos 605 WiFi media player- all but the iTunes purchase functionality is
there. Apple could do the Archos idea a LOT better with the iPod Touch UI
and iTunes compatibility.)

> It may come about this summer since multiple "iPhone" devices are
> rummored to be ready for release.

Prepare to be disappointed like those who hoped/predicted the MacBook Air
would be a tablet or a UMPC-sized MacBook instead of a thinner version of a
standard giant laptop. (When will manufacturers learn that making an
unwieldly brick thinner just gives you a thinner, lighter, yet equally
unwieldy brick?)

Yep, they are available online. I'm told they will be available for
telephone order (and I think in the stores) on May 12. Nice phone. I wish
they hadn't disabled wi-fi. Though considering its evdo access there would
be limited need for wi-fi, I'd still like to have had it.
